Mattex Service Company is excited to announce the acquisition of Rardin Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning in Mattoon.
Rardin Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning, has been a locally-owned and operated services provider located at 521 N. 19th Street in Mattoon, IL.  Beginning October 1, Rardin Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning will merge into the Mattex team in a partnership to provide quality solutions to the needs of customers in Mattoon, Charleston, Arthur, Arcola, Sullivan, Neoga and surrounding areas.

Mattex Service Company has selected the recipient of a free furnace in its 5th annual Veterans Day Furnace Giveaway. The annual giveaway benefits a deserving Veteran in need residing within Central Illinois.

Postal Workers Win Free Furnace for Mattoon Vietnam Veteran

After collecting over 60 total nominations, the selection committee, composed of Mattex employees, selected a Vietnam veteran and lifelong resident of Mattoon, Illinois. The Veteran, who wishes to remain anonymous, received multiple nominations from employees of the Mattoon United States Postal Service office, after they noticed he did not have any heat in his home.
“He is the most kind, considerate, and caring man,” said Jennifer Sledge of the Mattoon Postal Service. “He’s always so concerned about us being warm as we deliver mail and I feel like he needs to be warm himself. He has done so much for our country, and it’s time we do this for him. This furnace will do so much for him.”

Preventing & Treating Frozen Pipes

In lower temperatures, pipes are highly susceptible to damage. Ensuring you properly protect your pipes from cold weather is vital to keeping your home safe and protected from serious damage.

Before Cold Weather Hits
As temperatures drop, there are six steps that can help you prevent frozen or bursting pipes:

• Locate your main water shut-off valve, in case of emergency
• Wrap exposed pipes with insulations or heat tape to protect areas that might be prone to freezing
• Keep a small trickle of water running through faucets on colder nights
• Leave cabinet doors open where pipes run through
• Make sure you’ve shut off and fully drained irrigation systems

What to do if your pipes freeze

If your pipes freeze, it’s time to take action! Don’t let your pipes thaw on their own– you could run the risk of a burst pipe and more extensive damage to your plumbing!

1. First, turn on your water faucets. This will help you locate the frozen pipe. Plus, moving water can speed up the thawing process.
2. Find the frozen pipe(s). They’re usually in an outside wall, under a sink or in an unheated crawl space.

2021 Veteran’s Day Giveaway Winners

Since 2016, Mattex has intentionally honored local Veterans annually by donating a free furnace, air conditioner, installation and one year of maintenance to a deserving local hero on Veterans Day. As a team with strong military ties, we recognized a profound need in our local community to directly meet the needs of local military personnel and their families through safe and efficient heating and cooling systems.
For its fifth annual Veterans Day Giveaway, Mattex doubled its impact by giving a system, installation and maintenance to both a deserving local Veteran and a local Law Enforcement Officer. Mattex’s team received over 100 nomination letters about deserving men and women

in need of assistance. After careful consideration, two winners were selected.
Our 2021 Veteran winner was Ann Stock of Windsor, Illinois. Ann was nominated by her sister, Peggy Graumenz with the following letter:

“Sgt. Stock did tours in Turkey, Italy, and other areas. She had a daughter whom she left behind with her grandmother, which was a heartbreaking choice she had to make. After leaving the Army, Ann worked for the US Post Office and retired from there a few years ago. Ann has always been one to volunteer for any task. While a young adult Ann was active in her church being a reader and distributing communion. She volunteers at the American Legion in Shelbyville, she is always assisting elderly folks when they are in need. She assists with food drives in the community and many other community events. I feel anyone who has served our country is deserving of some assistance when it is available to them. Please consider Ann Stock for the heating & air system. Thank you.”

The team at Mattex is also proud to honor Arthur Miller of the Champaign Police Department as the winner of our system for a local Law Enforcement Officer. Art was nominated by his mother, Ronna Miller, with the following letter:

“Art Miller currently is a member of the Champaign Police Department. He also serves as a Major in the Army Reserves. He started in the Army National Guard at the age of 17. Besides being a Detective, he also serves as a member of the Bomb Squad and is in charge of the Honor Guard. He, along with his wife and 2 daughters have sacrificed many hours in his service to both community and country. This would be a great way to give back to someone who has given so much. He has spent his entire adult life serving and giving back to his community and country. A new HVAC system would be a tremendous way to show appreciation for his and his family’s sacrifices for community and country.”
